Windows update stuck?

I have just installed a fresh installation of Windows 8 on my dads PC. To update to Windows 8.1, I need to do a number of updates. If I try to do the updates, it gets stuck at 0KB/0% complete and then stops trying to download updates. Any idea guys? As far as I can tell it's nothing to do with metered connection issues within windows which I've seen a few people get results messing with these settings.

You will need to be patient. It will show 0% for a while, but will eventually complete the updates. Windows 8.1 addresses that bug.

See if you can determine which patch you are hanging on then download it separately to install.

If the downloader stayed on 0% for longer than 5 mins without giving up then id let it run. I just tried to use the Update and restart function, it apparently installed 10 of 84 updates, then failed to configure them and restarted windows to revert back -.-

Nevermind, somehow after trying to revert back it managed to install most of the updates, I now only have 10 left, and these ones are downloading ok.
