Hello,
I am going to give my laptop away and I want to get everything off of it (onto an external drive) except for the OS. I have some questions:

-Will I be able to use my Microsoft Word install from the external drive?
-If I clone the drive and then boot from the drive on another computer will all of the programs work as they normally did?
-Can I password protect the external after all of the files are on it?

Thanks,
Jay

Hi Jay_curtis36

If I follow your hopeful intent correctly .. you're thinking of making a clone of your system minus the OS... storing that clone on an external drive... and then hoping to run that drive and the cloned data/progs as though it were still in your old computer. If that's the correct gist of what you're asking it won't work.

The reason is that software needs to install in an OS to run and in turn that OS needs to install itself in specific relation to the hardware, a Motherboard Memory CPU and a drive. Additionally if you do clone (make an image of your entire system's drive, as opposed to simply transferring your data (files, photos, music ect.) it's not going to prove transferable to any other than identical hardware as...

Finally yes you can password protect your data on the external drive.
