Looking for advice on a custom build (going to use NCIX.COM)

I'm an inexperienced tech novice who is new to the forum and in need of some constructive feedback on a potential system build.

After nearly buying an ASUS prebuilt system, I stumbled upon the world of custom building your own system and ever since then I've been excited about the prospect. Unfortunately, the timing isn't right. However, I think I found the next best thing--the $50 build to spec service offered by NCIX.COM with price matching to boot (one day when my son is older, I would love for the two us to take on the challenge of building our own system, now just isn't the right time).

I've spent a great deal of time researching components and I used pcpartpicker.com to compile the "rough draft" version of my proposed desktop.

I would like a system that will be good for a few years and that might make it for more than five years with potential upgrades (that's why I picked a Z97 chipset--hope that was right!). It's going to be used by my family for mid-level gaming (maybe more one day if this supplants our PS3), 1080p streaming and any other function that a growing family will encounter (not video editing or any other technical applications). I guess I'm looking for an all-around system that we can grow into and hoping to come in as close to $1,000 as possible but I have flexibility so please don't cut corners for the sake of hitting the mark (e.g., my current build is $1,200). Since I don't know a thing about building a system, please let me know about any instructions that I need to give them in order to reach the perfect build with whatever parts you think would suit me best (e.g., I want the SSD to be used for the OS--I think I might need to tell them that although it seems to make sense--I read about mounting the SSD in places other than the drive bays--is that something I want to do?--should I have the fans moved to other spots to increase cooling? Do I need more fans? If so, what size and where?, etc...). Sorry about all of the babbling but I want to give you guys more info. so you don't have to waste any time with me! Without further ado, here is my Frankenstein's monster!

Thanks for your help, I know I'm in good hands with you guys (I was really impressed by the atmosphere of sharing around here---sure there are some snarky folks here too but they need not apply for the best solution!

Dear,

Your selection of components is very good. I've one question though. Your CPU is i5 4690 (non-k) but your beautiful mobo is Z97 series. Z series chipsets are for overclockers who would be using k series CPUs from Intel. Now if you are not into overclocking then change the mobo to H series chipset otherwise consider changing the CPU to 4690k/4670k.

Rest your build is good enough.

Thanks, Easy. Do you think going with the Z97 and a K series CPU will "future proof" me better? Also, what about changing the position of the fans--when I was reading reviews of the case I went with, I noticed some people swapped the position of the fans and I believe a couple might have swapped out the stock fans for others. Anything I need to be concerned about? Thanks again!!!!

In PC Components nothing is future proof. This is hard line but it is a fact. With rapidly changing tech, one can't be ascertain about this term of future proofing.

Z97 and K series CPU are a way to go for sure and you'll be benefited. Position of fans play important role in ensuring the optimal air flow in the case. Though you really don't need to be concerned too much because you can change the fans at any time provided if you have the fans :)

As indicated, looking for an all-purpose system that will be mid-level gaming, 1080p streaming--family PC. Sorry--my post was probably too long so probably got lost in there!!! Thanks.

Oh sorry I kind of skimped the post so I missed some stuff.

-Cheaper processor same performance.
-H97 chipset is fine for this non-overclocking build.
-8gb of ram is plenty.
-GTX 760 is a stronger GPU.
-550w is plenty.
-Windows 8.1 is more optimized.

Remember that when you price match with NCIX, they do not count rebates. At least they didn't when I price matched.

Real---thanks for taking the time to go through my build and to provide me with alternatives. I was wondering if some of my choices were overkill for my needs (always figured better to go with more than less but this isn't my area of expertise so I need someone else to make that call, that's why I'm here). Gonna check it out and mull things over (I'm in EDT and the kids will be waking me up sooner not later!!).
