being told to spend a lot on psu, i want to save money in other parts of my build, so please help suggest cheaper parts.
otherwise let me know how what you think of this build. i know these are supposedly good parts for, but i want to know if any of these particular models have had problems like not lasting long or anything like that.
also, let me know if it will be okay to use my older parts (whether its compatible or not).

the parts i plan to get:
cpu: amd fx6300
gpu: amd r7 265
mobo: asus m5a97 r2.0
psu: xfx 550 UPDATE: just gonna buy cheap $25-$30 550-600W psu at a store that has good reviews.
case: cooler master elite 430
ram: patriot viper xtreme 8Gb (2x4Gb)

older parts i want to reuse from hp pavilion p6142p:
HDD - Size: 640 GB; Interface: SATA; Transfer rating: 3.0 Gb/sec; Rotational Speed: 7200 RPM
disk drive - DVD+/-R/RW 16X 12X +/-DL LS 12X RAM SuperMulti SATA drive; Interface: SATA; Data buffer memory: 2 MB; Maximum storage capacity: 8.5 GB

Good balanced build. But why dont you opt for the r9-270 by adding a little more cash :)  And get the core xfx 550 not the TS 550 as TS is much more costly.

The XFX 550w is probably the cheapest you can go. It's a great quality psu at a competitive price. Anything under will result in lower quality.
Overall, the build looks good. I'm not a huge fan of the CM Elite 430 because the cable management in there is horrible and will result in horrible airflow.

Good customer reviews mean nothing. You should be looking at professional reviews. If anything, cut down a bit on the motherboard. The psu is the last thing you want to skimp as a low quality psu can blow up and kill some of your components as well.

yea professional reviews can be good, but for the most part they just make you pay more than you actually have to. with costumer reviews, you actually read what you might be dealing with... though even this isnt 100% accurate since companies sometimes try to just rate their own products really good.
ignore the psu. my dad is not letting me look at anything above $30 for that. hows everything else though?

Tell your dad that if you save $20 on the psu, there is a good chance that the cheaper psu will blow up and kill your whole system. Really...I'm not joking on this. A bad quality psu is one of the worst thing you can do for a gaming computer.
And no, customer reviews are mostly stupid. I have read some of the reviews and while some of them are good, most of them are really stupid reviews. There is always a chance with electronics that something is DOA, and when someone gets a DOA, they automatically give it one star. Then there's people who use it for one hour and says it works and gives it 5 stars. With professional reviews, you actually get to see what is inside the psu and see if they use high quality components or use low quality components inside the psu to save money. Lower quality components inside the psu is what can cause it to explode. They don't make you pay more than you have to. They are just advising what you should be looking for in order to keep your rig stable and safe.

another question i have is, considering the other parts, will the asus m5a78lm lx plus be almost as good for me? if it is, i should definitely go for that as its half the price.
this way, i might be able to spend more on psu. still, if its not nearly as good, ill end up going with the more expensive mobo.

If you want a cheaper motherboard, go for the ASRock Extreme3 R2.0. I wouldn't go for the Asus one you just listed because it's a low quality motherboard that's not really suited for FX chips. You should be aiming for a 970 chipset motherboard like the ASRock one I just listed or the Asus M5A97 R2.0 you posted above.
