Ok, so after upgrading ever part of my PC over the last few years, I am selling the old parts as a complete PC. I finished testing the old PC earlier today and installed Win7 Home Premium on it. (Using my current key because I'm going over 16GB of ram soon which isn't supported).

I have a laptop with Win7 Ultimate on it, so I got the key off it.I thought since it doesn't contain OEM in it, I was good. Using Windows Anytime Upgrade, I upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate (Said key wasn't an upgrade key). I have the iso of Win 7 Ultimate if I need to use it to clean install.

Upon restart Windows says it is 7 Ultimate but the key isn't activated. It appears, from phone activation, the license cannot be used on more computers than is allowed by the license although I have unregistered the key from the laptop and removed it from the registry using slmgr. The laptop now says "This copy of windows isn't genuine in the bottom left", confirmed the key was removed successfully.

Any help or ideas on what I should do now would be awesome

The Laptop shipped with Vista Basic. Any way to tell if the 7 Key is OEM?

EDIT:
Ok, got in contact with Microsoft support after verifying it was a retail version of win7 ultimate. Support process was easy and my desktop now has a genuine copy of windows 7 ultimate on it.
The laptop has it's OEM vista back on it.

After reading my original post, I feel I wasn't clear that the Laptop contained a non OEM product key. My bad, I guess
