Hi all,

Thanks for reading this. I am looking at buying either of these two laptops, and was hoping if you could help me in deciding which of the two is the better laptop in terms of speed and which is more future proof.

They are the following:

ASUS R704A-TY258H-3rd i5-3230M
2.6 Ghz (turbo max 3.2 Ghz)
i5
6 GB RAM
750GB hard drive

Lenovo G710 i7-4702MQ
2.2Ghz (turbo max 3.2 Ghz)
i7
8GB RAM
1TB hard drive

I am particularly puzzled by the fact that the i7 should be a faster CPU right? but then it has less clock speed (2.2 Ghz vs. 2.6 Ghz of the i5ASUS). Does this matter, or does the i7 need lees speed or compensate elsewhere.

Is the i7 a 4th generation, and does this matter?

And then still overall: which one is better, faster and will last longer in the future? Any difference between the one being an Asus and the other a Lenovo?

Many thanks,
Vermeer

The i7 is a quad core with hyper-threading, so 8 threads total, while the i5 is only a dual core with hyper-threading (4 threads total). Also, as you correctly note, the i7 is a 4th generation chip while the i5 is only a 3rd generation (as they are different generations you cannot directly compare clock rates - at the same clock speeds the fourth generation chip is more powerful).

So with that said, the i7 is the better CPU, by far, plus the lenovo comes with 8GB of RAM as opposed to 6GB.

also the dGPU, which would make the most differnce

Thanks for your replies.

- Damn_Rookie writes that even with the same clock speeds, the fourth generation chip is more powerful. But is a 4th gen 2.2Ghz still more powerful than a 3rd gen 2.6 Ghz?

- Is there any difference / what is your opinion on ASUS vs. Lenovo? Is one more durable, less problems experiences, more silent, etc?

- I will mainly use my laptop to use a program (Citrix) with which I can access my desktop from at work, in order to work at home. In that light, does it matter which of the two I choose or should I just go for the cheaper one? Which one will last me longer in the future?

Thanks again!

Haswell has a bit of a gain over Ivy Bridge. Even if 2.2Ghz isn't representative of 2.6Ghz it'd be close, and they have the same boost speed anyways so it ends up being faster.

Hi there
It depends on your personal preference. If you want to use them for heavy processing later on then get the lenovo (4th gen pc, more RAM and better ones, larger harddisk for storage).
Both laptops can do what you want to use them for, the only question is, will you want them for anything else in the future... and of course the price difference since you didn't specify that.
Regarding the clock speeds, don't worry about those since if you want you can just turn on turbo mode in the bios and both would run at 3.2 Ghz as you have specified that yourself.
And both laptops have integrated intel HD graphics so neither of them would be all so awesome for games (the lenovo has a slight edge even there because of the processor) (edit: even considering integrated gfx the lenovo is better since the asus has a HD 4000 and the lenovo has a HD 4600.)
But for Citrix both will do just fine, so you have to decide either by price or the fact that you might need them for something else later on...

Cheers and good luck with your new laptop whichever you may choose ;)

In general assuming the same # of cores and the same clockspeed, the increase in CPU performance from Ivy Bridge to Haswell is 6%. That means a Haswell generation CPU @ 2.2GHz is equivalent to an Ivy Bridge CPU @ 2.33GHz. A slight improvement.

From an integrated GPU (iGPU) point of view, the Intel HD 4600 provides about a 30% - 35% performance increase over the Intel HD 4000 which means games can run smoother / better. The Intel HD 4600 is still weak compared to a dedicated graphics chip. But a least you can still have some fun with your laptop.
