I am planning to purchase i5-4690k Devil's Canyon and i have toned down my options for mobos to these two. There haven't been many reviews of the mobos and the ones that are there are making my decision process harder.

I would overclock my i5 to not more than 4.0 or 4.2 Ghz and no more.

Primary use : Gaming.
Preferred theme: Black and Red
Budget: Max of $200-220

And also suggest me a good liquid cooler for the setup. In the range of $80-100.

Help me out. Thanks

PS: my current processor is Lynnfield i5. Yeah i know. It's THAT old. So this purchase is going to be an important one.

More about : asus maximus vii hero msi gaming

CPU cooler, Noctua NH-D15, you won;t get a liquid cooler better then that for a similar price, and little hassles when installed.

The Hero is nicer, but is ROG really worth it, no. The Gaming 7 is a great option, and for the price, and even better choice. You may of heard; "ROG is better for overclocking", this is true however most of the time you will not even tell, only if going to the extreme of overclocking, and in most cases the CPU isn't stable, the MSI will be just as good, especially for that speed (4.2GHz).

I am looking into liquid cooling so that it doesn't cram up the insides of the case. Liquid coolers allow more air flow, don't they ? I was thinking of Corsair H100i which is currently $99 as well.

airflow, not really.

The H100i is a great option, I highly recommend it if you prefer the extra space.

i think you will need whole lots of patience for Dewils Canyon, since theyre pushing release date forward. i was into buying one my self, but gave up. i dont intend to wait another year... so i choose haswell and 97 chipset mobo. i think this is best solution for now... i hope that helps...
good luck, greetz

Devil's Canyon is Haswell Refresh of unlocked processors. And they will start shipping on June 20th. Enjoy.

I went with the 87 Hero, and loved it, just picked up the Z97 Hero at the release and it's even better, been running it w/ a spare 4770K while waiting for the 46-4790K release, it's well worth it, OCs great, runs cool, better BIOS and great sound...I won't touch MSI mobos for client builds due to the poor QC

Well, I got a msi z97 gaming 5
work great, with the intel i5 4670k
I m not doing the hard-overclocking, so I pick all because of the oc buttom
(well, so gaming 7 should be better ~)

anyway, both hero and gaming are good, and the spec are similar
so....you can't go wrong with it.

I will not be doing any extreme overclocking and such and so do you think Hero is worth the extra bucks compared to Gaming 7 ?

If price plays in then I'd look at the Z97-Pro, as mentioned I won't touch MSI mobos due to their QC issues, I get more mobo problem calls on their mobos than any two other manufacturers put together
