Hello,

I have been having crashes in Simcity so decided to run memtest v4.

Memtest was ok when using stick 1 in slot 1 for two hours.
Memtest freezes when using stick 1 in slot 2 at 24 minutes.
Memtest freezes when using stick 2 in slot 1 at 1:26 minutes.

Considering ram stick 1 was fine in slot 1 but not in slot 2 does that mean either my motherboard or cpu memory controller is broken?

I did do some overclocking with raised vcore using an AMD FX 8320.

More about : cpu memory controller broken

you will need to put the cpu into another motherboard to determing if the mmc is defect.
its possible you have damadged the cpu.
take it to a computer center to save you the time and money to determine the exact problem.
if you do not have a motherboard to test.

Try it at stock settings, no oc.

Hi John,

I don't have another motherboard to test with.

I am assuming that computer center means computer repairer.

Just to check, is there anyway I can test what component has failed at home?

Is it likely to be the motherboard?

Hi Rob,

All the memtests were done with bios defaults.

there is a posibility.well you can not do alot of stuff exept change components.
thats what computer repair shop usualy do its fast and does not require expensive equiptment.
and they usualy have parts lying around for testing.

Will increase the CPU or RAM voltage at stock speeds help prevent memtest from freezing?

Certainly worth a try

Its far more likely to be a motherboard problem rather then a CPU problem, but without being able to swap components, it's going to be hard to find the one at fault.

Hi Gamerk316,

Why do you think its more likely to be the motherboard?

I am think of upgrading from the Gigabyte GA-970A-D3P to the Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3.

Is it likely to fix the problem?

If it is the motherboard, is it the overclocking that did it or was it just a poor sample?

Windows is stable.

Ran prime95 for 20 minutes - no errors.

Why? :-)

do a bios update and run memtest again.both rams installed.
it might be a bug that memtest freezes.it did not give you ant error though.
if you had a memory issue you would most likely get blue screens.
what error do you get in simcity when it crashes?
and is simcity legit or cracked version?
give us your build.
because sim city crashes it doesn't mean it is the ram.
and memtest freezing might be a coincidence.

Hi John,

Thank you for your persistent help, I appreciate it.

My build:
Gigabyte GA-970A-D3P
AMD FX 8320 8-CORE CPU
Corsair 4GB DDR3 1600MHz Vengeance Performance DIMM 9-9-9-24
Corsair 4GB DDR3 1600MHz Vengeance Performance DIMM 9-9-9-24
550W Corsair VS550 ATX
Corsair 120GB Force
Gigabyte R9270OC
Windows 8.1

The BIOS is already the latest version, F5.

Yes, there are no errors in memtest, just freezing.

Simcity is genuine.

Windows this morning crashed on start up, then booted next try.

The following is a link to a zip file containing the dmp file from the Windows crash and the two errors that happen together when Simcity crashes, one after the other.

Thanks man. :-)

first of all you had a blue screen.the ntoskrnl.exe kernel stopped working.this is responsible for hardware visualization and memory management.can be caused by faulty memory.
what i want you to do is reinstall all drivers.

I just ran the latest version of Memtest, v5.01 for four hours and counting with both modules and 0 errors and 0 freezes.

I was running Memtest v4 before.

The plot thickens.

I have just reinstalled all the drivers from the manufacturer website and the latest AMD GPU driver.

Simcity still crashes in the exact same spot.

I performed the sfc /scannow and it came back with no problems.

I did most of the steps from the referred article but am no really prepared yet to reinstall Windows.

An update to the situation.
1. Simcity only crashes when I bulldozer a road that connects to the highway just outside the build zone. If I bulldozer that road, it crashes every time. When I just left it, it didn't crash while I played for a couple of hours.

2. Memtest v5.01 ran for five fours with 0 freezes and 0 errors.

Why did Memtest v4.0 crash consistenly when Memtest v5.01 did not crash at all with the same BIOS settings?

Yeah its strange.

The Simcity game I am referring to is the fifth in the series, titled Simcity, made in 2013.

Conclusion:

Running Memtest 4.0a caused the freezing at various times in various RAM configurations.
Running Memtest 5.01 was perfect for 5 hours with both RAM modules installed.
Verdict for Memtest: A problem with the specific configuration and Memtest 4.0a.

Prime95 ran with 0 errors on stock BIOS settings.
Verdict for Prime95: Crashes with voltages over 1.45 on FX 8320 with GA 970A.

Simcity (5, 2013) crashed when bulldozing a road that connects to the highway outside the build zone.
Simcity (5, 2013) ran fine for hours as long as I did not delete the road that connects to the highway outside the build zone.
Verdict for Simcity (5, 2013): Bug causing crash.

Thanks for everyone that help troubleshoot these issues.

It was a bug in Memtest. I used a different version and worked flawlessly.

Simcity was another separate issue.

Thanks :-)
