Performance Increase from FX 4100 to FX 8350?

Hi guys, I'm not exactly confident in the department of CPUs and their differences so this was definitely the best place I knew of to ask. I currently have an FX-4100 CPU, GTX 760 and a 600W Corsair PSU. I can just afford the FX 8350 and was wondering if the gaming performance between the 2 would be worth the £130 investment as I do want to upgrade my MoBo and RAM because I bought as a pre built PC and I'm not sure as to the quality of my components (my original PSU has already given up and smoked out 120W under what it claimed to be), but I don't have the cash to do both. Thanks in advance, YMY.

If you are buying a new CPU and motherboard, you should just switch to Intel. It would be a bit more to go with the Xeon, but you could still go with i5.

Bare minimum for an FX 8320 system

CPU: AMD FX-8320 3.5GHz 8-Core Processor (£101.99 @ Aria PC)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler (£25.13 @ CCL Computers)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P ATX AM3+ Motherboard (£63.26 @ Amazon UK)
Total: £190.38

With the board you were considering...
Compared side-by-side, the 8350 will wipe the floor with the 4100, but there are caveats.

To get the most out of the 8350's overclocking ability, you need a motherboard with an 990FX chipset. Whilst both the 4100 and 8350 share the same socket type, not all motherboards will play nicely with the 8350, so you may need to put a budget aside for a new motherboard. The AM3+ socket is also rather old, so expect a new one to come along soon.

What's the spec of your current build?

FX 4100: 81% of the performance of a PII X4 965
FX 8350: 115% of the performance of a PII X4 965

So yeah, a significant improvement. Still not particularly good though.

Hi, thanks for the answer. My current specs are;
MoBo; MSI 740GTM -P23 (FX)
PSU; Corsair CX600M
GPU; MSI GTX 760
RAM; 8Gb Hyperam
CPU; FX-4100
And then some unbranded Hard drive and Optical Drive.
I was looking to upgrade possibly to this; http://www.newegg.com/global/uk/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131877,
but as I have always heard, CPU and GPU make the biggest difference to gaming as so wanted to make sure that the upgrade to the 8350 was actually worth the investment because unless I can get a summer job, no upgrading with be done for a while.

Apologies, my mistake, I have this one; http://uk.msi.com/product/mb/760GMP23_FX.html, not an MSI 740GTM P-23. So overall, would it be better if I picked up a new MoBo and overclock the 4100 slightly? I really don't have the cash to go Intel completely and won't do for the foreseeable future, and AMD has been pretty good to me with 0 problems as of yet.

It is a myth that Intel is always so much more expensive.

Hi, thanks for all the great answers, I;ve enver gone wrong asking for help on this forum. Just so i can build a case for both intel and amd in my head, im creating two lists on PC partpicker. would this be a good invest for someone with a limited budget and AMD?; http://www.amazon.co.uk/MSI-A88X-G45-GAMING-ACLHD-Assassin-Liberation-Motherboard/dp/B00IC5XZ98/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1403109786&sr=1-1&keywords=msi+a88x#productDetails
Also, I don't really understand the whole FM2/+/3 etc, so would this MoBo support both my current FX 4100 and a possible future 8350?

You make a very good case for Intel. I think I will hold off then and research a bit more. Thanks for everyone's answer, its a shame I can't pick more then 1 best answer, YMY.
