building a PC and will be playing a lot Skyrim with mods and in the future GTA V. I really for a graphic card that performs well under a lot of pressure from graphic mods. I hope to pay maximum of 400 dollars but will stretch if necessary

Solution
i would go for the r9 290 why? simple,

Have more computer cores 2560
more default memory 4 gbs
more memory bandwidth 512 bus
price to performance king: 400 to 425 dollars, you can find it even cheaper if it is used 300 dollars or less
it can match the gtx 780ti when the r9 290 is overclock and beat it if the gtx 780ti is not overclock.

But if you want to buy the r9 290 it have to be an non reference model, here is the best one for the money and it will let you overclock the hell out of it: http://www.amazon.com/Sapphire-Version-PCI-Express-Graphics-11227-00-40G/dp/B00HJOXUKC/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1403119132&sr=8-2&keywords=r9+290

i hope it helped you ;D

need more information. what resolution are you playing on? how many monitors? What PSU do you have?

if you are gaming on a single 1080p monitor there is no need for 6gb of Vram! it’s a waste and your system will not even come close it using all of that. Since you are on a tight budget I would say stick with an AMD card, you will get more performance for your money. Just stay away from any reference models. AMD GPU’s do still run hotter but the aftermarket coolers do a good job.

the 770 is a powerful card though and if you can get a 4gb model you will be just fine for a single 1080p monitor, for the next couple of years. I personally prefer NVIDIA due to some bad experiences with AMD but that’s just me.

The 290 is Ok if you get one with a good non reference cooler like sapphires tri-x. The 6Gb 280x is a waste unless using xfired and a large resolution. With the 770 4gb is almost too much when you get close the 4gb vram usage a single card will struggle.
