I tried searching for any similar posts and couldn't find anything. I'd like to upgrade my memory. As stated in the title I have a Gigabyte GA-880GM-USB3 motherboard, and doing some research on Gigabyte's site I found:

Support for DDR3 1800(O.C.)/1333/1066 MHz memory modules (Note 2)

Note 2 :To reach DDR3 1800MHz or above, you must install two memory modules and install them in the DDR3_3 and DDR3_4 memory sockets."

This lead me to a few questions:
Since 1600 isn't listed, does that mean it wouldn't be supported or that I'd have to place them in the 3 and 4 slots?

Doing a search on newegg, I couldn't find any 1800 memory but I did find 1866. Would my motherboard just bottleneck or slow the speed down to 1800? Furthermore, would overclocking at 1800 require any tweaking of settings in the BIOS or would I be able to plug them in and go? The motherboard manual doesn't give any real info on this.

Finally, would I have to worry about ganged vs unganged?

Thanks in advance for any help

Found this on Gigabyte website :
4 x 1.5V DDR3 DIMM sockets supporting up to 16 GB of system memory (Note 1)
Dual channel memory architecture
Support for DDR3 1800 (OC)/1666/1333/1066 MHz memory modules (Note 2)

1st - 1600Mhz will be compatible with this motherboard.
2nd - You should place them into slot 3 and 4 for maximum performance (which I feel it's weird)
3rd - 1866Mhz ram sticks will be bottlenecked on that motherboard. The manufacturer says you can overclock your ram (1066, 1333 or 1600) up to 1800. This overclocking requires tweaking into your BIOS. Note that 1800Mhz ram won't give you better gaming performance than 1600. It only help when dealing with very big files (like 3d modelling, video editing, etc.)
4th - Do not ganged...

4th - Do not ganged your memory unless you will be using VERY demanding programs, since you wont need the extra bandwith. Unganged memory will perform faster and that's what you need.

Hope this helps!

Any overclocked ram will need to go into slots 3 & 4 while leaving banks 1 & 2 empty. If you want to populate all 4 slots then you will only get to run them at 1333 or lower on most motherbds otherwise you will begin experiencing crashes. Event he 890fx xhipset has this limitation. (900series chipset fixes this oddity)

Ganged/unganged = dual channel/single channel

You will need to enable the memory profile in the bios or manually change the settings; the motherbd will default to standard 1333 timings. (at least on all the gigabytes that I have used.)
