I'm looking to upgrade my processor (currently a Phenom II X2 555) and I'm trying to decide between these two processors. I'll need to upgrade my motherboard either way (which is currently a GIGABYTE GA-870A-UD3) but I'm curious which one will be better for what I'm wanting from it, primarily video games like Watch_Dogs and Battlefield 4, as well as some minor game development with UE4 and the Unity engine. I currently have a 750W PSU, and 6GB of RAM (which I'm also looking to upgrade, but not right now).

If anyone has some budget motherboard suggestions as well, I'd love some suggestions there too but I understand if this is the wrong forum for it.

Intel i3-4130
AMD FX-6300

What motherboard revision is it? Have any idea?

Revision 3.1 -- and I noticed something earlier but failed to mention it. The motherboard itself has the word 'AM3+' on it, despite the fact that I was told that it only accepted AM3. Is this not the case? If so that would save me a lot of money.

It can take AM3+ ! :D  Here is your CPU support list: http://www.gigabyte.com/support-downloads/cpu-support-p...

I am not sure if it will take the FX-83xx series, but the FX-81xx series at least are supported. I would look around for an FX-8150.

Find a used 8150, get a Cooler Master 212 EVO, and overclock it a bit. I don't know if your motherboard is ready for any real overclocking though.

I'd buy a phenom II X6 before I bought a faildozer.

Why, exactly? I'm curious. Are the early FX's particularly not reliable?

Can't seem to find any 8150 that isn't overpriced. Any other recommendations? I'm honestly not too concerned about future games going into 2015, as I'll probably be upgrading my rig entirely, but just something that can play current games on relatively good settings. Should I just buy the FX-6300 with a new motherboard?

Because clock for clock, Phenom II was faster than faildozer.

Interesting, Logainofhades. So Bulldozer was just a total flop?

Logainofhades, is it correct when I say that an FX-6300 will fit in a motherboard that takes an FX-6200? http://www.gigabyte.com/support-downloads/cpu-support-p...

No, the FX 6200 was also faildozer. That board was never given support to handle Vishera/Piledriver chips.
