make compilation music cd's from my external hard drive seems to be impossible

I bought an external hard drive and spent days loading my cd collection to it thinking that making compilation cd's for my car would be simple. That was about five years ago and I am ready to give up. Windows Media player is absolutely confounding. It shuffles my tracks and unnames them then creates a data disc after I set it for audio disc. I have wasted so much time and so many blank cd's. Any help would be appreciated.

  1. Never disconnect or shut down your external drive or, better yet, get a secondary internal drive of the same or larger size and move all your audio to that. My guess is, every time you disconnect the external, WMP removes those tracks from it's library. Every time you reconnect, it attempts to re-add them. If your library has traces of your tracks not completely removed (we are talking Windows here), then when WMP tries to re-add them, it can't because it thinks the track already exists.

Beyond that, it's just a matter of creating a playlist in WMP and use that to burn an audio disc.

I've used WMP plenty of times to make an audio disk and it worked every time. You need to make sure your tracks are named properly and have the right meta data in the tags. Without seeing exactly what steps you are doing it's tough to see what you are doing wrong though. Post step by step what options you are selecting, and post screenshots if you can.
