TOTALLY BAD ADVICE HERE, note OP said "error messages saying required drivers are missing" that has nothign to do with your Internet provider.

What ASUS is telling you, and you may be out of your league to understand it (it is okay :) ) is you need to use the RESTORE AND RECOVERY DVDs that came with the system to WIPE IT CLEAN and put it back to how ASUS sold it to you. Yes you would lose all your data, especially if this is Windows 8, which REQUIRES a Internet Connection. If this was NOT Windows 8 I would suggest getting a external Hard Drive ($49 Walmart) then run Windows Easy Transfer and backup your data, THEN do the restore DVDs. But Windows 8.1 does NOT support that anymore, all such 'backups' are online to Microsoft servers (your Live! account).

If this is all too over your head, stop now, take everything that came in the box, put it in the box and bring it to a local Mom and Pop Tech store for them to help get you squared away.

I know that's what they probably told him. They may have some issues going on with drivers. But coming from someone who has worked in telecommunications tech support, there is a chance they can get the internet working without deleting everything on the PC if they call tech support.

It was my understanding from what was said that the driver error messages didn't appear until after they attempted what the Asus rep told them.

Never just jump with a off cuff answer though, probe such generalized posts because I can't count the number of instances I had someone say EXACTLY THE SAME THING, and the issue was, they do NOT have a ISP no router, no wifi, nothing, they just bough the 'hardware' and thought like a 'cell phone' it would just 'connect' .

But that issue is now dead because the true issue (note the key statement) is the drivers no longer installed so any such other solution is irrelevent if the OP hasn't done as ASUS said.
