Reuse 7 key after installing 8

I'm about to purchase a copy of windows 8. My current windows 7 was purchased online with a student discount. I initially thought it was an OEM copy but looking at my product ID there is no sign of OEM. SInce I bought it I have reinstalled on 2 separate occasions notably after replacing the mother board and CPU and haven't come across any problems.

I will be purchasing a retail key for 8 but will be upgrading so I don't lose all my files and programs (my pc is for music production so installing numerous plug ins and sample libraries would take forever). I assume I can update to 8 without formatting the HDD?

Am I correct in thinking I can reuse the 7 key in a separate pc?

Hi and welcome to Tom's forum.

Upgrade to Windows 8 is something easy but needs to be done carefully. I would suggest your that you check 1st if all those programs, plug ins and libraries works on Windows 8. After that you check that, if you are good to go, the Windows 7 key is free for use.

Is your Windows 8 an Upgrade? If so...no. Your previous Win 7 license is no longer valid.
Was the Windows 7 an Upgrade? Student version often are.

OK..I see that you're getting a Retail Win 8. Still, the best way forward is a clean install. yes, it takes longer, but far fewer potential problems.

Thanks for the answers. I can transfer my libraries to a separate HDD so I might as well do a fresh install. It'll take a bit longer to install the apps and plugins again but will be worth it in the long run.
