Would an Athlon ll X2 280 work on a m3a78-em mobo?

I checked the website, and the highest it states is the 270, however for all I know that list simply may have stopped being updated. Granted, it is an old fart of a motherboard.

I'd purchase an fx 6300 at Microcenter, but unfortunately I can't afford the additional ddr3's at the moment.

My 750ti will be here soon, and want to ensure I can run games at decent settings, as well as PCSX2 with texture packs and widescreen patches.

6300 won't work............ I would junk the board................ I saw where a 260 would work.........all I could find. what is the difference between that and a 280?

Pardon me, I'm speaking as if everyone knows what I'm thinking. I'd get a free motherboard with the fx 6300 from Microcenter, the only issue is having to spend an additional $75 for new ram (DDR2 obviously won't work).

My mistake, you're correct: It's 260, not 270. The only difference I'm aware of is clock speed.

maybe the cpu will work......... but being somewhat familiar with pc hardware I would get the 6300 with the "free" motherboard and take the hit with some cheap memory. way better.

I'd rather have the 6300, but the difference is $45 versus roughly $160.

I'm also considering a Phenom II X4 940, currently negotiating the price on CL.

CL bad idea. your money. should have thrown together a new apu build. would have been further ahead.
