MSI GTX 770 usage never goes above 70%?

Hey guys, just a quick question. Since I got my new keyboard with a little LCD display on it, I've been using it to monitor various system statistics as I game or do other things. I've noticed that my GPU usage NEVER goes above 70%, even in benchmarks or heavily modded Fallout/Skyrim with enhanced textures and ENB effects.

I get around 45+ FPS in New Vegas with a bunch of mods, texture replacers and ENB effects, which I'm not complaining about since I was just barely running vanilla New Vegas on my old crappy laptop.

Is it normal for my GPU usage to never go above 70% or should I possibly exchange it for a new one since I'm still under warranty? Once again, I'm not complaining about the performance I'm just wondering if that's normal for my particular GPU.

System specs are in my sig, can give further details if required.

Thanks guys!

Edit: Just wanted to quickly add in that I changed the PCIe cables yesterday to rule out faulty cables. I have a semi modular PSU, so I just unplugged the PCIe cables that were built into the PSU, and attached two 8 pin PCIe cables into it and plugged them in my GPU. I triple checked to make sure everything was attached and plugged in properly, so it's not because of my cables.

Could it possibly be my CPU sucking up power since it's OC'ed and not giving enough to my GPU? I highly doubt that since I have a fairly large/high quality PSU and I can see my GPU power usage at 99-100% in demanding games/tests.

Did you confirm the monitoring-tool's findings by using an alternative utility for monitoring? If so, does this persist even after a system restart?

No, I've been using just MSI afterburner to monitor my GPU usage. I'll check to see if AIDA64 will let me monitor my GPU usage on my little display. Yes, it persists after system restarts.

For those two games, its absolutely normal on a high-end system. What that GPU usage is telling you is that the GPU doesn't need to work all that hard to put up good FPS numbers. It's also usually somewhat a measure of how much your CPU is holding your GPU down. But in this case, those Bethesda DirectX 9 games are not very GPU demanding, so it's really the game's fault. Play something more demanding, and I'm sure you'll see closer to 99% GPU usage.

I got similar usage numbers with my GTX 780 Ti on New Vegas, but then switching to Bioshock Infinite, I was at 99% almost the entire time.

Ok, my apologies for the stupidity guys. It was just MSI Afterburner not reporting my GPU utilization correctly, I set up AIDA64 to monitor my GPU usage and it goes up to 99-100%. I was just worried, with the GPU being by far the most expensive component, I jumped to conclusions.

My CPU isn't bottlenecking me at all, it's OCed to 4.4GHz and my CPU utilization NEVER maxes out with any of the games I've played. Well, except in 4 player Diablo 3 I'll get occasional lag spikes because of my CPU, but that's because Blizzard sucks at optimizing their games. With a LOT (I mean a LOT) going on on-screen, core 1 spikes to 100% usage while my other cores stroll along at 20-30% utilization. I don't know how my poor buddy play's 4 players on his crappy AMD A6 laptop lol.

If you have a 780ti, I assume you modded the hell out of your NV graphically and gameplay wise? I have multiple texture packs(NMC's large/EWI's big pack/Flora overhaul, EVE, etc), 80+ mods and Rudy ENB with the latest .dll's. Extremely demanding setup, but my god. The game rivals Skyrim with all that good stuff enabled. I've played over 500+ hours on the 360 version of NV and have already put in 300 hours since I got it on Steam a few months ago, and I still can't get enough of it. I'm gonna cream my pants when Fallout 4 is FINALLY announced.

I'm with you there, NV is a great game. i didn't like that there weren't a lot of random roaming creatures to kill and getting around Vegas itself was a bit of a chore. Unfortunately, I didn't mod mine at all, but now that you mention it, maybe I should. The GTX 780 Ti destroyed the game so much, ~100 FPS with about 40-50% GPU usage, and actually didn't even run at full 3D clocks most of the time. The DLC where you teleport to the Big Empty was pretty good (can't remember the name).

Dude, you don't know what you're missing out on if you didn't heavily mod your New Vegas install. If you're interested I can PM you my load order, which contains about 80+ of the best mods (IMHO, of course). If you thought the wasteland was to empty and barren, give Vurt's wasteland flora overhaul a try for realistic flora integration, and increased wasteland spawns to spawn more stuff to kill. You can customize the settings of IWS, so in the beginning of the game you can have it on low settings so you're not overwhelmed early on, and turn it up as you get more powerful. Check out Project Nevada as well, it's one of the most downloaded files on the Nexus for a reason. I consider it a MUST have if your playing NV on PC.

With that 780ti you should be able to pull in a smooth 60 FPS even with all the texture mods and ENB effects. If you do give it another shot, make sure to download Rudy ENB from the New Vegas Nexus. I've tried a good majority of the ENB's on the Nexus and that one is by far the best of the bunch.

With texture mods and ENB, it'll give your GPU a run for it's money. My 770 laughs at vanilla New Vegas as well, but with all the texture mods and ENB effects, my GPU utilization is at a constant 99-100% while only getting about 45+ FPS. If you don't know about ENB's, they basically add in a crap ton of lighting and shadows FX, completely changing how the game looks. Vanilla New Vegas can only draw 6 shadows on screen at once, with ENB everything gets a shadow, even the grass/flora and foliage.

It's really something you have to see to believe. :)

Alright, I'll bite. If it's no trouble, make a list of your mods and I'll see how many I can get installed.
