I would like to try to install Windows 8.1 onto a computer with an old Motherboard. Not that it matters, but the Motherboard is an ASRock P4S61

When I try to boot from the Windows 8.1 installation DVD, the computer refuses ... giving me the message: "Cannot boot from CD - Code: 5"

I think that this question has been asked ( and answered ) previously in this forum ... but I didn't quite understand the answer.

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/288137-30-6728-boot-boot-code

In that thread, hawkshaw86 said that you could get the computer to boot from a Windows 7 CD by replacing the "boot file" with a Vista Boot File. I think that would work for me, because my computer WILL boot from a Vista DVD ( but not from a Windows 7 or Windows 8 DVD ).

Can someone please tell me which file hawkshaw86 was referring to ? The way hawkshaw86 was talking, it sounded like this replacement operation might be tricky.

It will be a fresh install. I will re-format the Hard Drive before I start.

I know that the Motherboard manufacturers refuse to write new Drivers for their old hardware ... but I have been amazed at how many computers will run Windows 8.1 using Microsoft's Generic Drivers, or ( in some cases ) even some old Windows XP Drivers. Before I give-up on this project, I would at least like to give it a try.

Hi Crusty

The best solution is and only solution in your case is to install windows 8 on your hard drive using another PC.

Then reinserting the Hard disk back into your preferred machine or computer system.

Windows 8 is very brilliant, it'll install the generic drivers for your hardware automatically once it detect the hardware software isn't present.

So I support i7baby's comment.

Hope you found this helpful, probably not helpful if you don't have a second PC .
