Slow Wireless Connection

I bought all the parts and built myself my first computer for gaming a few months back with the intention of using it in my bedroom, which is located upstairs and on the opposite side of the house from my router. I thought it wouldn't be much of a problem, since my xbox 360 and laptop both run perfectly smoothly, both having a wireless connection in the same room.

Turns out, it didn't work well at all. I bought the TP-LINK TL-WDN3800 Dual Band Wireless N600 PCI Express Adapter off of Amazon, which had great reviews, but my connection was terrible.

On my newly built computer, my download speed was around 2-3mbps, while my crappy old laptop was at around 25mbps.

I moved it downstairs and tried it again and got a perfectly strong connection, so I know the problem is just being so far away.

Since I really have my heart set on keeping it in my room, I'm wondering if it's worth it to buy a better, more expensive adapter, Are there significantly better ones? I don't want to have to move it downstairs or string an extremely long ethernet cable throughout the house. Thanks!

Solution
It's possible that the metal case on the PC is blocking the signal, if the router is behind where you sit. Try turning it 180° and putting it on the other side of the room.
