Changing NAS from RAID 0 to RAID 1 and retaining files?

I have a 2 HDD NAS drive that is set up as RAID 0 and now has a failing drive due to bad sectors. However I don't seem to have lost any files so I am assuming that as the drive as a whole is only 25% full and I haven't written to it for several weeks the bad sectors do not affect any files.

What I want to know is whether before I replace the failed drive I can convert it to RAID 1 so that there is a complete set of files on the good drive then replace the bad drive so that it will just mirror or will I just simply have to do a complete rebuild?

I don't know much about NAS boxes but I do know a little about RAID.

Backup your NAS box to another hard drive before doing anything else, if anything goes wrong with the RAID conversion you will still have the backup.
Do you RAID conversion, my own method is to destroy the existing RAID set and completely rebuild it in the new configuration, your NAS box may give you other options but I just don't know.
Restore the file to your NAS box from the backup. I would do this anyway as it's not guaranteed every file survived the conversion.

Thanks for all the help. Fortunately I have a full back up.

A couple of stupid questions though.

Will I have to reinstall the firmware either after replacing the drive or creating the new array.

And even though all the files will be wiped, will the file structure ie folders etc remain or do I literally have to build everything from scratch?

Many thanks
