Im building a pc and I plan to overclock my i7 4770k with the asrock z87 extreme4. What is the max that I can overclock it to? I want it to be maybe around 4.5 or more. Any tips or tricks for a newbie?

Thanks in Advance :D

Be aware that some examples of a given CPU will overclock better than others - the whole point of overclocking is to get the max possible out of the individual chip, rather than the max that every example of a chip can reach - so you may get a chip that will go to 4.5Ghz really easily, or you may get stuck at something lower.

Basically, in order to overclock, you need the best supporting parts - a good mobo known to overclock your chip well, good RAM, a good PSU and sufficient cooling.

Each chip will be different than the next chip. I had a 3770k and it took over 1.3 voltage or so to hit 4.5ghz. I later on got a new one and it can hit 4.5ghz no problem stable with 1.2 voltage. I would say any 4770k can hit around 4.1-4.2 ghz though. Overclocking is always a sort of chip gamble unfortunately. Btw, I've owned quite a few recent MSI, ASUS, Asrock board and I would say my favorite board I've owned so far out of about 15 is the ASUS sabertooth. Very nice boards if you are overclocking.

LIke Y0GI said, z97 is the newest standard for 1150, so there's really no major advantages of getting z87 anymore. If you can find a z87 board that is good quality on sale, I would go for it. Otherwise, I recommend getting a z97 board. Asrock boards are top notch period. Usually they offer way more connections/features than other motherboards for the same price and are still made with excellent materials. If you compare the Asus z97-A and the asrock z97 extreme 4, you can see that the extreme 4 has more sata 6 ports, more USB 3.0 ports. However, the extreme 4 does lack more than 2 PCI express ports, so if you want more than 2 graphics cards, then you would need to get a different mobo.

As for overclocking, the extreme 4's usually focus on offset voltage OC but they work great from my own experience and I never had issues. Again, if you are planning to OC I highly recommend a Sabertooth mobo as I don't think there's too many boards , if any boards better than them for that alone. But, if you go with the extreme 4, you won't be disappointed.
