Should I upgrade my GPU in order to keep up with upcoming PC games?

I have a Sapphire Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition OC GPU right now, but it is starting to show its age on more demanding games such as Far Cry 3, Thief, and other games that use anti-aliasing. I want to be able to play everything on very high settings, with a decent amount of anti-aliasing. I was thinking about upgrading to a GTX 770 4GB, since they are not too expensive. Also if it helps, my CPU is an i5 4670k, at stock clock rate. I will be overclocking soon though (once I know what I am doing).

Which card would you recommend? I want to switch over to Nvidia, but I would be totally fine going with an R9 series.

depends on your budget, or you could add a second 7870 for now and wait for the new series and these will drop in price. the only thing is still only 2gb of v ram which isnt a big deal on 1080p

I mean for $130 you have a second lightly used card, and this setup will be faster than a 770

my 7970s will hold me off till the next gen ati cards come out, they easily do 100+ fps with bf4 and hardlined beta maxed out on 1440p

plus I like the look of two cards in my system haha.

what powersupply are you running?

also a 280x/7970ghz is the same as or a hair faster than the 770 with more vram depending on the model.

if you go r9 grab a 290 for sure its worth it

I have a CX 750M, so I have a little bit of room to expand, but I do only have a mid size ATX case, which is already a little crowded. Not sure if I want to crossfire my 7870 because of that. My budget is $300-$400, but I would like something for a little less. I kind of figured my build will be fine until Nvidia has their desktop 800 series out, then I could buy a 770 4GB for even less than it is now.

yea if you already plan on the 800 series grab a second card for 100 then sell them later on, the 7870s are tiny, I was surprised when I got my friend the same card as you, though it was going to be about the size of a 7970.

I ran both my cards in a mid tower for a while with no issues.

your powersupply shouldnt have any issues
