Can I hardwire a mouse to the touchpad connection inside a laptop?

Hello all. I have an asus laptop with burnt out usb ports. I had an ipad wire connected to the laptop and my infant son takes the other end and sticks it in an electrical outlet. Heard a small click and everything in my room went dead (he tripped the circuit breaker). Very thankful he's ok and a "shame on me" for not watching him better, but now my usb ports don't work. I get power out of all of them, (i.e. an optical mouse will light up) but no function works. I get a message something along the lines of "your hardware didn't install correctly". Anyhow, I tried a total system recovery and no change. I removed the motherboard hoping to see something burnt out that I can repair but the motherboard looks pristine. The touchpad on the computer works fine, but I hate it. I would rather use an optical mouse. Is there a way to splice in an optical mouse onto the cable that goes from the touchpad to the mobo? I see some blogs about people using a touchpad mouse and wiring it so that it can be used as a ps/2 mouse on another computer. My problem is that I have no ps/2 port. I only have usb ports. Anyhow, my intention would be to burn a small hole in the side of the laptop and run a mouse cable in there and wire it to the touchpad wire and thus have a functional, permanently attached mouse for my laptop. Worst case, since the touchpad seems to be compatible to a ps/2 somehow, can I wire a ps/2 mouse to the touchpad cable? Thanks in advance.....

Looking pristine or not, the USB circuitry on the motherboard is cooked.

Can you wire a USB or ps/2 mouse into the existing touchpad circuitry? Doubtful. But try it...you literally have nothing to lose.

Good show that the boy is OK.
