Dead HDD, can I use a different PCB to temporary replace the current burnt out PCB?

Most modern PCBs store "adaptive" information in flash memory. These "adaptives" must be transferred from patient to donor, even if the firmware versions are an exact match.
In other words, a straight board swap rarely works, and in some models it never works.
