Getting an APU with a graphics card is not a good idea unless you are stuck on a budget and want to maximize performance. Also, I would really recommend getting an Intel CPU with that powerful of a GPU. Don't get me wrong, I like AMD and use a 6350 myself, but just with that powerful and expensive of a graphics card pretty much any AMD processor will hold you back at least a little bit on a bunch of applications. If I were you, I feel that it would be a worthy expense to upgrade to an i5 or i7.

Would you go with haswell or devil's canyon? And what motherboard would you recommend? Thinking about Asus.

I would go with Devil's Canyon if you are interested in overclocking and if the prices are close to similar. Overall, Devil's Canyon is a better chip in non-direct performance means and slightly more suited towards the future, and as long as they are within $30 to Haswell, I would say Devil's Canyon is definitely the better bet.

I don't know what your budget for a motherboard is, but the new Asus Maximus VII Hero is probably the best Z97 board around. However, it is also roughly $200. It has all of the latest features, tons of very fast SATA ports with new speed standards equipped, and all of the beefy additions you would expect of such a premium motherboard. If this is too costly (which I would completely understand), let me know and I can help you find a good one for a lower price.

I modified your build with an i5 4690k and ASrock Extreme 4, it won Tom's Value Award. I changed the 290 to a Gigabyte Windforce which is almost as good as the Vapor X and added a power supply, the Antec HCG 850M currently on sale.
