Currently have a single HD7970 and would like to replace it (if it would even be worth it). Within $550 is there any card out there that will out perform my HD? Also there isn't much room for an SLI/Crossfire... especially with how giant the current card is. Nvidia preferred.

Not worth the upgrade cost IMO if you arent going to crossfire/sli. If you are dead set on spending money though, save a bit more and go with a 780ti

I would consider this PNY 780 OC card, I had it for 2 weeks upgrading over my gtx 670 and loved the difference:

$460 after rebates which is amazing the only reason I upgraded was because right before my return period this card went on sale: A 780ti OC for $660:

Everyone is recommending the ti for a reason though, it really does get the most FPS especially an OC card that is further OC'd. I hit 1288mhz all the time according to my afterburner which I think is good considering that it is 100% stable all day everyday. Great temps and fan @100% is a little louder than a USB powered fan and it has a low powerful sounding but not annoying hum(for the 670 think old computer that is super loud with a slightly high pitch, 780 OC card with the triple fan had a lower pitch than 670 but still jet engine sounding this 780ti is a lot better).
