I recently bought this gtx 770 to upgrade from my 570, since installing I noticed my temperatures while playing games always caps out at the 79c. This isn't underload either, when I play Final Fantasy 14 a realm reborn it uses around 69% power and the temperature still reaches 79c. I have a 200mm spectre pro intake fan at the front with full clearance and a gentle typhoon 120mm exhaust fan in a pull config with a h70. My i7 4.2GHz runs at 68c under load.
Friends who also play this game on maximum with cards such as the 780, 760 and 660 reach 55 to 60c max playing Final Fantasy. I have done every possible fan configuration and also just taken off the side panel. The card still reaches 79c, the ambient temperature of my room is around 20 to 25c.

I have also noticed the card throttling itself when playing the game on maximum, when this is not a very demanded game at all. I have lowered the settings to 'high' to reach a stable 60 fps and the card still reaches 79c. This is the GPU boost 2.0 cap, so I downgraded MSI afterburner to 2.3.1 to try and not utilise boost 2.0. I have also run the valley benchmark is average settings and same temps, along with Titanfall and Hitman Absolution on high settings also reaching the same temps.

I am going to try a friends EVGA ACX 770 today and see what temperatures I get, at the moment it is looking like it something might be wrong with the card seeming as FF14 is being throttled but running at maximum on older cards with less temps.

Does it sound like the cooling or bios of the card might be at fault here?

Have you tried a custom fan profile with afterburner?

Try putting the fan 100% full time and test if you get throttling and max temps, then work from there.

Have already done this, set it to 100% speed when reaches 80c, so the fan speed was around 98% and the temperature was still hitting 79c. I also took the side panel off and lowered the graphics to high, throttling still happened as well as the high temps

sounds like a problem with the heastsink/interface. are the fans actually spinning up. I had a 7970 that one fan burned out and it would hit high peak temps...

I have your exact same card and it never goes above 60c... It's auto set to increase the fan when it hits 60c and I think the fan has only ever gone to about 67% usage. If airflow isn't really the issue in your case(PUN TOTES INTENDED) then I would assume something is wrong with the card.

I would set everything back to auto and turn off any OC and test the card with benchmarking software first(like you should of done before loading any games at all) and if the card is just spiking massive heat for no reason at all then I'd be using that shiny warranty and getting another one.

By the way, even if you have the right amount of airflow the heat inside the case can still be awesomely hot. That i& will overheat like a champ to if you let it. Perhaps you should do some burn ins/tests and report back if everything else is totally fine??
