Solution
Use Isopropyl rubbing alcohol (90%+) and a lint-free cloth. If you do not have lint-free cloth, coffee filters will work. Make sure you are holding the CPU by its sides. To prevent damaging the pins, never touch the pins on the bottom and do not set the CPU on a flat surface for cleaning either. After cleaning, wait a few mins for it to be dried off before re-applying thermal paste. Also, don't use too much rubbing alcohol. You don't want to drench your chip and have it dripping off. Just enough so the cloth isn't dry.

The only AM2 socket that I know of is the AM3/AM2+. Is that the one you are talking about? If so, then both AM3 and AM2+ should work. The only difference that I know of is AM3 supporting DDR3.
