Yes all R9 290x cards will crossfire with each other no matter when you brought it because they share the same GPU.

A reference card is the standard AMD cooling that first cards came out with (generic).
Non-reference is the custom cooling manufactures develop and use on there version of that card.

They will both crossfire with each other, but the "reference" model will run a lot hotter.
I would recommend you place that card in the bottom slot.
