Solution
Your USB ports are most likely always on ports. It will continue to provide power even when the system is off. Your LAN port will stay on as well, it usually stays on to wait for wake on LAN commands to come through so you can remotely access your computer. Both are normal. If you want to change the settings look at your Motherboard manual and see if there is an option in BIOS to disable the Always on USB and the wake on LAN setting. Your CD drive should be replaced, 6 years seems like it lived its life. Check online, you can get new DVD drives for around $20.

When you shut down your computer you shut down your computer and NOTHING ELSE. The computer is the box where everything is plugged in, following that logic, why would shutting down the computer have anything to do with the speakers?

As for your disc drive, your laser may be dusty, you might need to take it apart and clean it.

Sounds like he was talking about USB powered speakers.

Yea most motherboards and prebuilt PC's come with always on ports due to the fact that people want to charge their keyboards, mice, and other USB electronics. It is a handy feature, but in toby64's case it should be a feature that can be disabled.

No he doesn't HAVE TO. But if he wants the speakers to be automated, and turn off with the build, without doing anything, then that is the only way to go. If he just wants to know if it is normal then yes, it is completely normal.

The LAN card can wake the computer and so can the keyboard and mouse, PS2 or USB, so it's normal for these to stay powered by default.. for everything to go off, you need to cut power off completely... doing this can affect sleep mode which is saved to RAM but not hibernation which is saved to file.. Hibrid sleep which is combining the sleep mode with hibernation settings is not affected by powering off the computer completely.

There's no telling how long a CD/DVD drive can last.. some die with little use, others last much longer... some lose the capacity to read or write, DVDs can stop reading CDs or DVDs, etc.

The grinding noise you hear must be a worn motor bearing, this may cause the motor to spin slower and that may be why it takes longer to read.. it may eventually stop reading because reading takes a certain speed. On the bright side of things, disk burners are becoming very cheap... you can now buy a CD/DVD burner for half (or less) of what you paid 10 years ago. Blue-Ray burners that used to cost hundreds of US dollars some years ago, are now from $80.00 to $50.00
