The disc is still spinning and the light is still on, the computer is even recognizing it, but it no longer shows any data. It won't let me enter to look at what's inside. I've tried it on four computers and it still isn't working. I've tried the Seagate diagnostic software but it hasn't worked. This is kind of a big deal since my college work was on there and I hadn't submitted it yet.
It has worked for the past seven months but when I took it from one computer to another, it stopped showing any data. I do safely remove hardware too.

Secondary question, would an SSD drive be more reliable? Less moving parts and whatnot.

Edit: If I search for certain folders in my hard drive using the my pc search option, it will show the files I'm looking for, I just can't enter them.

Also Piriforms Recuva has found 5515 files in there.

It sounds like you are out of luck. The hard drive appears to have failed. The only way to really get the data off of it is to take it to an expert and pay them A LOT of money.

- or -

You could try reformatting it, but you WILL lose the chance of getting any data from the drive. This option should be the only option if you just want the damn drive to work again.

SSD are much more reliable. You can throw them around the class room while powered if you wanted too.
