so ive heard by some people that in the two slots, it only holds up to 4 gb in each (so total of 8) while others said it supports 8 Gb (total of 16 Gb).
I know someone that has this too; they got it two years ago. In the book it came with, it says each slot supports 4 Gb. on the asus website, it said this motherboard supports a max of 16 gb.

i dont need 16 Gb, i know, but i found a really good deal where this motherboard comes with a 8 gb memory stick. i don't know if they are compatible though. please help!!

if it matters, the memory stick is the patriot viper xtreme 8Gb

but then look at this, where it says max is 16...
http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M5A78LM_LX_PLUS/specifications/
isn't asus website more reliable, being asus's website?
but in the book it said it only supports till 8...
im so confused!

That is weird. I would guess that there is an error on the website. Because if newegg and the book said it can only support 8 gigs, I would think that the chances of them both being wrong is less likely than them messing that up on the Asus website.

But honestly there is really no way to tell now unless you try it out. Do you have access to any 8 gig dimms that you can try and see before you buy one?

actually i think i might have this issue solved. I got this brilliant idea to see what is compatible with this particular motherboard on pcpartpicker.com. it says the motherboard only holds a max of 8. however, it suggested memory either 2 sticks x 4 Gb, or 1 stick x 8 Gb. this makes sense, as the deal i saw came with the one 8 Gb stick. any way thanks for responding!!
