Just installed my new Sapphire r9 280x Toxic and it is running at 95% activity and 74c with NO games open.

It's on a factory clock and not in graphics over drive.

why is it going ape shit?!

thanks in advance.

Have you checked to make sure the computer is not using on the on board Graphics card?

Just installed - Today/Yesterday how long ago exactly?

This isn't usually a problem but - What power setting are you on? Balanced/Power Saving or Performance

Check for malware etc apparently some of them chunk out your GPU

Also have you tried reinstalling the drivers?
Made sure you've mounted the GPU correctly?

Thanks for the reply.

The on board graphics are disabled.

Installed it yesterday.

My power plan is on Razer Game Booster.

There are no viruses or malware

already re-installed the drives, once off of Sapphire, and once off of AMD

the card is mounted fine.

not a clue what it could be.

I was just playing watchdogs and the activity is at 99% but the temp is staying at 74c

Whilst playing watch dogs did you notice any artifacts/low fps etc

I don't really know a whole lot about razor game booster apart from the fact it apparently does zero.

That temperature is odd, I know it should reach around the mid 60c whilst gaming.

Try installing the drivers via the disk - First uninstall your current ones, tell me what happens then also.

Actually... before you do the drivers from the disc

Go into Catalyst CC ( gotta remember this off the top of my head ^^ )

I had a similar issue with my card although it wasn't idling as much was around 70's I actually had to enable Graphics Overdrive to fix the issue
I wasn't 100% sure why but apparently without it enabled my card was using like 30% of it's potential so - From my card's perspective it's maxing because ultimately...I was the one limiting it ^^ Although I think it's to do with the factory over clocking I literally had to enable it to unleash it's max potential.

I personally think the fan speeds when left stock aren't that great. I usually keep the fan on my GPU running about 45/50c% and it keeps it nice and cool even when playing BF4 etc If I leave the card to cool itself self it peaks upto 60c really quick.

But yeah try enabling Graphics Overdrive and see how it performs then.

This card should be noisy when under full load, like really noisy so if it isn't that is most likely the problem.

I was messing around in TRIXX and i set the GPU clock to 1300, the mem clock to 1600 and the voltage is at 862.

The activity dropped down to 0% and the temp is holding at a nice 33c the fans also went silent.

Thanks so much!
