Update SSD's OS, while keeping everything on HDD safe?

I have Windows 7 currently installed on a 64GB SSD, with about 30gigs of free space on it that I use for very small programs such as CPU-Z, Speccy, fan controllers, things of that nature. Everything else such as, music, photos, games, larger programs, etc. is on the 1TB HDD. There isn't an OS installed on the HDD (obviously). So what I want to know is will it be safe to update the OS on my SSD to Windows 8(.1) without losing HDD files? I seen some forums about people who were having issues but I believe this is because they were just now upgrading to an SSD and still had OS files on their HDD that would create registry problems.
In my head it makes sense that my plan would be totally feasible but before losing all of my games and music and what not, I thought I'd ask you wonderful people :D

I feel as if I should unplug my HDD for the duration of the install for safe measures.

Any thoughts?

Update: the programs on my SSD can be easily installed again so there's no worries about backing them up.

I think you may ok to do what you want.
One potential problem is if your hard drive was attached when you built windows 7, there will be a hidden recovery partition on the hard drive.

Is there some feature of windows 8 that you like?
I have tried it twice and hated it.

64gb is a bit small for a "C" drive
Consider buying a 120gb ssd and cloning your 64gb ssd to that.
Then if you have a problem, you can put your old ssd back.

I did this with an iffy Z87 to Z97 upgrade that worked well.
I now plan on cloning my "c" drive as a regular backup measure.

The problem you may run into is the 'larger' programs on the HDD, if like almost all programs, they are embedded in the 'old' OS registry, they will not run & will have to be re-installed, your data will be safe on the HDD.

It's still a fairly new build, so the only programson there really are Steam, Skype, Origin, and Battlefield 4. The rest is music and pictures.

I like windows 8 better. It's smoother feeling, I like the home page, and it's also more optimized for battlefield 4, with lots of reports of a raise in FPS. I have Win 8 on my laptop and love it.
