Irregular Power Supply Buzzing

Hello,

I've had my computer for about three years now. It was self-assembled, and barring a few hiccoughs, has worked rather well. The other day, however, the computer began to emit a harsh buzz in short burst of half a second to one second. It does this irregularly, sometimes only a few minutes between buzzing, sometimes going for hours without making a sound. It sounds like the noise a fly makes when it's stuck against something, buzzing to escape.

My PSU is a Cooler Master Silent Pro 1000w. Honestly, I don't think I needed 1000w, I got overeager when building my computer. Since this started, I've unplugged everything, cleaned my computer, checked the parts, moved around all the wires, done just about everything I can without pulling apart the power supply.

There are some strange elements to the buzzing. Firstly, it happens even when the computer is powered off entirely. The PSU is still plugged in to the wall socket, and it's still turned on, but the computer itself is off, as are all the fans. I don't know what to make of this.
Secondly, the buzzing - and I might be getting conspiratorial here - seems to happen only within a specific timeframe. Today and yesterday, when it first happened, the buzzing began at around 8:00am. After several hours, around 1pm, the buzzing ceased, and despite using the computer for the rest of the day, I didn't hear it again once. At 8:00am again today, cue buzzing.

Other than the buzzing, the computer works fine. It's making me uncomfortable, and the sound is incredibly irritating.

I'd like to know whether anything stands out as an obvious cause. I'm not entirely worried that this means the death of my PSU, since it's only intermittent. Should I download a program to monitor my voltage, and if so, what program would you recommend?

Thank you.
- Pete

Vacuum the power supply. Mine had a bunch of dust in it after 3 years. I just went the spare parts route so I have 4 extra power supplies lying around.

I would vacuum the bottom while blowing air into it and there was so much dust.

No one likes to hear spend money but I usually just get a good power supply when there is a sale since my money is burning a hole in my pocket anyways =)

I'll give it a try! What precautions should I take before doing this? I'd hate to ruin something by accident.

Cleaning might help, but since it occurs when the system is off, it's possible (or likely) you've got a faulty/failing transformer or coil. Repeated heating/cooling cycles can wear these components out. I'd contact CoolerMaster support. Its online support is usually pretty helpful.

I've done so, and am hoping they get back to me soon. Once again the issue straight up stopped in mid-afternoon, which leads me to think it might be a larger issue than just my PSU, if it's related to time somehow. Either way, thanks for your help, guys!
