Well, I have a burning desire to buy a brand new $1000 gaming machine, however I feel as though that wouldn't be realistic, as I'm soon going to college, so only being able to use this beast wouldn't be worth it long term.

So, what want to do is upgrade my family computer and turn it into a beast for gaming. I realize I won't be maxing out Crysis 3 anytime soon, but I would at least like to be able to run games like DayZ mod and Minecraft without god awful frame rates. Now, for this project, I have an ABSOLUTE max of $350, which I feel is more than enough. Here's the current specs of my machine.

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 830 @ 2.8 GHz
GPU: NVIDIA GT 220
RAM: 6 GB
PSU: Factory, Would say <350W

What I feel is the biggest weakness is the incredibly dated GPU. I feel once I give that a boost, I'll be in much better shape.

So tell me what you guys think. Recommend me parts and give me ideas on what I should do to beef my computer up!

Thanks as Always Everyone!

An older model Nvidia GTX 4, 5, or 6xx series might be good. Or if you are wanting something with more power like a 2gb GTX 750ti for $150.

I bought a used 1gb GTX 460 for $50 to upgrade the family computer and I put a 500W thermaltake power supply in for another $50 but I've got a $20 rebate which I sent in for that.

I'd definitely recommend an SSD though. I didn't think it would be THAT much of a difference. OS boots faster, games load faster, files transfer faster...
