New Build to Replace 2 Year Old AMD

Hello,
On April 27th my house was destroyed by a tornado. Along with it went my home built AMD computer. I am now looking to rebuild a new system. the following is my old build:

AMD FX-4170
ASUS M5A97 Corsair Vengeance 16GB
Intel SSD (OS)
WD Caviar(Junk and Stuff)
EVGA 550ti
Windows 7 Professional
Can't remember power supply

I am looking for advice on a new build, AMD or Intel, doesn't matter, just want something for all around use including light gaming, internet, movie watching, word processing, music editing, etc. I want something that wont cost more than my house, will hold up as far as not going totally obsolete in 6 months, run on Windows 7 pro again ( never used 8 and don't know to what advantage to upgrade).

Any advice as far as a comparable system that's somewhat in date and would run as good or better than what I had? Thanx in advance for any opinions and advice. Tim

core i3 should be good overall for what your doing (light gaming, browsing etc). its not an i5 or an i7 but you might as well
save your money for an newer generation i5 down the road

motherboard is on the expensive side but will be great for upgrades down the road. try to get a z97 motherboard

storage is an mx100 ssd released in june 2014 --with 256gb hope that should be enough.

video card will be good enough for light gaming. Didnt spend too much on it so you could save down the road for a better graphics card when they become cheaper and new games are released. case is on the low to medium end but good for price.

power supply has ok quality. has 600W which is more than enough for now but will be good for future parts which will require more power.

windows 8.1 is better in terms of it will get more fps in games and run more efficiently in that aspect. theres a program called classic shell which makes 8.1 look like 7 -- http://classicshell.net/

Thank you for the reply, $$ isn't really an issue, while I want to be frugal, I will pay what's needed. My question is would this build be equal to what I had before? I thought the I3 was a step down, no?

step down from what. about the processor? the processor performs better in benchmarks overall than the fx 4170.. processor has 2 cores but it has hyperthreading so it acts like 4 cores. this PC bulid should be better than ur last one. ill add monitor keyboard etc see if your interested.

This looks more like something that will last a few months before total obsoletion.!

System is up and running good! Can't say I am thrilled with Windows 8.1 but I'm getting around it. So far it is doing what I need it to effortlessly with room to spare. Thanks to everyone for the advice!
