CPU Running Very Hot

Hello. I recently built my first computer using an Asus Z-97 Pro motherboard, i7 4770k, and a cooler master hyper 212 EVO cooler. My idle temps are around 33-34 C according to HW monitor and when running prime 95 it gets up to 89-92 C, which I believe is way too hot. I already tried removing the heatsink, cleaning the surface of the cooler and cpu with isopropyl alcohol, and reinstalling the cooler according to the manual. That shaved a couple degrees off but it is still running hot. Any suggestions? I am considering going to fry's and having them look at it because I don't know what else I can do. Any answers are greatly appreciated.

Solution
Have you overclocked the CPU? Temps reaching 92 are certainly high but they are under Prime 95. Run some game like BF4 or get any CPU intensive task like video rendering and check the temps, if they still reach the same level then get it checked. If they don't you may consider changing aftermarket cooler.

Admirable

why change the evo... you can just add another 75 cfm fan or get 2 high cfm for it

I am running at stock and I looked for a video online of someone using the pea method and tried to match that amount, but obviously something is wrong.

Nope, it's not overclocked. I don't have bf4 but I do have far cry 3, so I will test it and see what happens. I did however play a much less demanding game, Dirt 3, and my temperatures only got up to 49.

Really? I thought I chose it because of all of the great reviews, saying 65C under full load. Is the i7 really that hot? Is it normal to get these temperatures with an i7 4770k and the hyper 212 EVO?

Well 49 is a very good figure.

EVO is one of the most recommended (budget) CPU Cooler and why not. It delivers man. But in this case temps are really hiking. Better remove the cooler, clean off the residue. Clean the heat cooler and its fan as well just in case. Apply the thermal paste (arctic silver), install the cooler again and see if it works.

If you get the same result then try to add another fan on the cooler making it Push and Pull Config and give it a try.

If temps still hiked above 80 then my recommendation stands or better get it checked from where you bought it.

I just installed another fan in a push/pull configuration and it only shaved off another couple of degrees.

I did that then added another fan and that only brought it down another couple degrees. But this is only in Prime 95, in other applications like gaming, it is not going above 65-70C. Is this ok? I am thinking about getting a Corsair H80 or H100i if I can't fix this, because that should bring it down to comfortable levels, right?

Yes, I am using stock case fans, but I do have a Corsair SP120 I can use as an exhaust or for 1 of the 2 intake fans. I am using the Corsair 450d which comes with Corsair's AF series fans.

Here is my case: http://www.corsair.com/en-us/obsidian-series-450d-mid-tower-pc-case

Hi awesomeaiden2

Your idle temps raise a couple of questions. First what is the ambient temperature? Second have you taken note of the Vcore at both idle and under load (the later when you're hitting the high eighties and low nineties)?

Lastly it might be a good idea to remove and reinstall the mounting bracket and back plate for the heatsink to ensure the fasteners are securely and evenly tightened without any encumbrances, because even though the heatsink attaches to its mount with spring loaded screws if the mount were off any degree to flat the rest won't function as it was intended.

My ambient temperature is 78 F or 25.6 C. The Vcore at idle is 1.744 and the Vcore at load is 1.616. Are these numbers ok? I have not changed the Vcore or anything so those should be stock. I have re-installed the back plate along with the rest of the cooler and nothing changed.

Wait a second... for the idle temps I am looking at the package temp... I have a feeling that I should be looking at the average of the core temps. The idle average of the core temps is 33 C, but the load average of the core temps is still around 90 C. Sorry about that. I have now updated my Idle temps in my original post. What are the package temps anyway?
