The difference: 500gb
It all comes down to how much you truly need. If all you are doing is storing some of your family reunion photos and maybe a couple songs, 500gb is more than enough. The average user with games and photos and other applications can make use of 1tb. 1tb drives are also really cheap now (around $50 for a caviar blue) so there is no point in not getting one anyway though.

Simply twice the storage space.....other factors can play in if different caches, RPMs, etc performance wise but mainly it's the storage space
