My friends hard drive appears to have failed on his laptop. To verify, I tried to put my hard drive into his laptop from mine and it will not boot in his laptop. I placed it back in mine and everything is fine. I was hoping someone could give me a solution to the problem. I was able to get into the bios using f2 and set it to boot from the hard drive. That didn't work so I tried from the DVD drive which was empty and that did not work either. No other f keys will do anything, we just get a white cursor in the top left of a black screen. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Drives with existing Windows installs often do not boot when placed in a different machine.

Create a Linux LiveCD and boot from the DVD drive. This is just to verify that the rest of the hardware works. If it does, then your friend just needs a new hard drive.
