Hi, i only have 254gb (ssd) in my gaming pc and need more storage for movies, music, not active games etc. Also it would be nice to have an external hdd so that i could easily transfer files from pc to pc. My only question is: If i plug a external 7200rpm hardrive into my 3.0 usb header, will it work like an internal and really run at full speed or will the usb header "bottleneck" its speed?

Solution
I got the 2TB WD2003FZX, 5 years warranty too and I wouldn't go 2nd best if you go portable
Also found 2 external enclosures for a single drives
a no name brand aluminium case, just says "3.5" MOBLE DISK" on front of box:
Specifications: External power supply
.LED indicator for Power and Action
.AC input: 100 - 240V/50 - 60Hz• DC output: 5V ---12V 2A• Color: Black
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
Mac G3 processor or higher• Mac OS x 8.6 or up
Windown 7/ XP / NT / 2000 / ME / 98SE
For USB2.0 speeds, the system must support USB 2.0

for $15 NZ so if you can buy them here, you can get them anywhere

and also found a USB3 unit
Vantec NST-330SU3-BK NexStar HX SuperSpeed 3.5Inch SATA to USB 3.0 & eSATA External Hard Drive Enclosure - Black

USB3 is pretty quick. If it's really just for storage and using for media then you probably wouldn't notice much of a difference between if it was inside the case or outside, and the added convenience of being able to carry it around is nice.

only 1 tip I can give and its with Western Digital, learning that their external hard drives have the not so best drives in them. I guestimate that others do the same so if you go external, smarter option would be to buy the enclosure and add your best HDD to it. info got from an article stating
"Drives are binned, the top quality to RE4,red, lower quality to consumer/oem. worst quality to external drives.
WD #003fzx
4 TB drive has a 171 MB/s, was 154 MB/s, 17 MB
3 TB drive has a 168 MB/s was 154 MB/s. 14 MB
2 TB drive has a 164 MB/s was 138 MB/s, 26 MB
1 TB drive has a 150 MB/s was 126 MB/s. 24 MB"

Also I have heard that the 1 and 2TB are the most stable / reliable and now theres even better drives than the #003fzx versions, but thats life

I thought about a enclosure before but the´re usally for more than one hdd and it also becomes more expensive when buying an enclosure.

Edit: I was thinking about getting a western digital external one cause they look nice for the price. Any opinions? what are the best 2tb 7200rpm external hdd´s you know/heard of?
