Motherboard only supports a weight of 450g for aftermarket cooler, what's up with that?

Here is the motherboard I was hoping to purchase for my first build:

GIGABYTE GA-H97-D3H

The problem I've noticed when searching on their website is in the FAQ, it says the max weight for an aftermarket cooler is 450g. Is that normal? The EVO 212 from Coolermaster and basically all other coolers I've looked at weigh more than that.

GIGABYTE GA-H97-D3H

Solution
I've installed those coolers on the z87 version of that board before without any problems and they said the same thing about it. I have about 16 systems that have that motherboard and cooler installed and no one has complained about their system being broken. I think gigabyte is just saying crap that doesn't even matter.

I guess they need to add that disclaimer now with these tower type coolers putting stress on there boards that may cause undue damage in some way they got to keep them selves covered for any claims... take your arm and hold it straight out in front of you - the longer you hold it out the heaver it seems to get and now you feell the stress on you sholder-- its just physics

I was wondering if it was a "to cover their own asses" type of thing. Ok sounds good, I'm also looking at an Asus h97 too, hopefully it can support more.

I totally understand what you're saying, but should I reconsider the coolers because of this max weight "fact"?

don't know I use the flat kind and right now I'm using the coolermaster vortex pluss I had around here from an AMD build and it uni fits intel so I just put it on this i5 .. I guess it seems to do ok have no heat isues and the memory slot closest to it is not blocked in some way .. ... i also like the cooler fan to blow down on to the board to hit the vrm/chipset sinks where the tower type just seems to blow into the fins and then just into the case [opinion] I'm using a old antec sx635 case .. but in the end I guess you just pick one you like and hope for the best with it ..

The one you mentioned, the Vortex, is slightly below the max weight for the motherboard I'm looking at, it might be best to play it safe and go with one like that. It does a decent job you find? Is your CPU at stock settings or overclocked?

Wow, that board has a lot of awesome reviews and has a decent price. So, even though it's not designed with gaming in mind, it should be find for gaming?

I guess I'm no overclocker and I got it for a AMD build cause it had the stock locking for the AMD socket and now its on this z87 i5 4670.. seems to do the job.. all I know it did fine on the am3 chip and looks to do the same on this i5 [?]

look this site over and see what you find there may be one better now that fits your needs

What exactly do the MSI gaming motherboards have that are even gaming oriented over other Z97s? The Asus motherboard has a ton of great reviews. Nice find, thank you :).

Well, if you're not overclocking and it works well, then assuming it works with what I buy, I'll likely go with it. That being said, I'm going to explore that website you linked me to. Thank you!

Msi has really bad support and don't always honor their warranties, so normally I just avoid them. The z97 a board is just as powerful as their gaming board and the real only difference is that it doesn't come with some of the extra junk overclocking software that never works.

the thing also with MSI is the killer lan thing I don't care nothing about anything with quailcom attached to it [opinion] my ''last'' 3 asus builds were nothing but buggy but I guess if you like tinkering a lot with something there fine .. went asrock this time around and so far so good fired right up and ran stable from first boot and have not needed to touch it since.

But Asus honours their warranties and has good support? They always get stellar reviews.

I've heard excellent things about Asrock too, which motherboard of theirs do you have? It's a tough call lmao, but Gigbyte is good is it?

I got the extreme 6 z87 I was looking at the gigabyte z87ud4 but it went up in price about $40 so I went asrock.. so far so good .. but with anything nowadays you either get a good one or a bad one.. I don't do asus any more ''But Asus honours their warranties and has good support? They always get stellar reviews. '' ya good luck... but any way asus just fall short around here .. lots of hype .. and they removed things from ther boards that I still like to have on one [rs232 port pci slots] after my last 3 I felt it was time to leave them alone ..

im not any brand fan boy but this time around asrock and gigabyte offered what I was looking for on there z87 board my buddy also got rid of his newer asus and went with the gigabyte 990fx ud3 said it was the best thing he did by replacing the asus and is happy with it ...

in the end the choice it all yours you got to look at what you want and need in your price range roll the dice on it and hope its not snake eyes
