.....in using a 2nd router to deliver internet to an xbox 360 in a room where the wireless signal is seriously degraded I was told that you have to disable the WAN on that 2nd router.

Can't be done the way you want. You can not just hook routers to the coax and have it work. The only way to even consider making it work like that is if you paid the ISP for a second connection.

What you are talking about is using the second router as a AP. You need to hook the lan ports together to do that. That means you need a ethernet cable between them which I suspect is not a option for you. You can with 2 boxes called MoCA use the coax cable to in effect convert the coax to ethernet. You would plug a ethernet cable from the main router to one moca, attach that to the cable with a splitter and then attach the second moca box in the other room. You would take that cable out to your other router LAN port and you in...

You could also use powerline networks to connect the rooms. MoCA device will likely work better but they are more expensive than powerline.
