The i7 has more cores, since it is a true 4 core, however the i5 has 4 logical cores. This means that the multicore performance of the i7 will be better. They both use the same power and have the same thermal ceiling, therefore they are the same here. The i5 however, has a 2.5Ghz stock clock rate, which rises to 3.1 in turboboost, whereas the i7 has a stock clock of 2.2Ghz, which rises to 3.2. Overall: I would go for the i7 (since my experience of intel turboboost is that it keeps it running at boost for 90% of the time - my i5-2450m is meant to run at 2.5, but spends most of its time running at 2.9 in boost - this is lower than its 3.1 maximum though). All of this depends on your useage, if you are using it for video processing or gaming, the more cores of the i7 will come up good, whereas for basic tasks (eg: word processing) the i5's higher clock and boost clock will come good, as i said though, the i7 for the same price as an i5, is a MUCH better deal - so go with the i7
