I've just installed my new MoBo ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0 AMD 970/SB950 ATX and everything is connected and working other than the cpu fan. I have an aftermarket cooler and although it is connected and working, when I boot my system I get an error saying CPU FAN ERROR! I can exit the bios and load up but I want it to boot automatically without me having to exit the bios.. Any thoughts?

This is a very common problem with Asus mobos.

There is a setting in the BIOS which monitors the CPU fan speed in order to determine if the fan is running or not. I believe that the default Min. speed is about 600 RPM. Anything less will kick out the alarm and disable boot.

As long as you're sure that your CPU cooling fan is operating properly, the solution is to go into the BIOS and lower the Min CPU fan speed to something like 400 RPM.

Again, you should ONLY do this IF you are sure that your fan is operating properly!

Hi yogi thanks for the reply. I'm 100% is working properly and I lowered it to 300rpm but I still get the error.. Any other ideas?

Seems like it must be some kind of mismatch between the fan and mobo.
1) Are you sure that you have the fan plugged into the right header on the mobo?
2) Are both the header and the fan 4 pins? 3 pins?

What is the fan's RPM when you enter the BIOS after a failed boot?

The fan is plugged into the header labeled 'cpu can' and yes both are 4 pins. There are 3 different cpu fan headers, would it be worth trying each one?

That seems to be very unusual to have so many headers labeled "CPU" fan. I'm not the most knowledgeable person on Asus mobos, but it just seems like only one header would be the "preferred" header for monitoring purposes.

Have you consulted the manual to see what Asus recommends? The manual might also explain the merits of each different fan header.
