CD drives missing (external and internal)

I have come across a very strange problem which is driving me mad.

I have a PC built for me by a local specialist. It is running windows 8.1 64 bit fully updated (it wasn't when this problem started but is now).

The computer is running multiple internal hard drives, and one external one. All these have always worked fine, and continue to do so.

I also have one internal CD / DVD drive, and one external CD / DVD / BD drive.

The strange thing is that both these drives have completely stopped working! I've been at it for hours this afternoon and cannot figure out why. I remember at some point in the past (either on this machine or the one I had before) the internal drive stopped working. At that time, I tried everything, and eventually removing a piece of software (I can't remember which, but think it might have been icloud) sorted it. So I have tried removing every non essential piece of software this time but nothing has helped. Last time it happened, the external one was still fine but now not even that is working.

When this problem started a few hours ago, the internal drive was showing up in "My computer" but when a disc was inserted the whole of windows hung. I removed the disc and windows was fine. Then I restarted windows and at that point both drives disappeared. At one point during the multiple restarts since, the external drive worked again and read a disc. I removed that disc and put another one in, and then it disappeared again.

I really don't think the drives have failed.

If anyone could give me advice I really would be grateful.

Many thanks in advance (and sorry for long post but wanted to give as many details as possible)

Hi

I suggest you google fix windows filter drivers problem
Only download fixes from Microsoft.com

Any program that is capable of writing to a cd/DVD drive can brake things and uninstalling in its self can break things relating to optical drives

I shall certainly google that thank you - but I have a little update that may confirm I need to do it, or perhaps change your advice, as now my problem is slightly different!
I was researching the problem, and found a suggestion of downloading a generic burning set of drivers which can be corrupted by iTunes sometimes.
I was sceptical but it worked! (Kind of). Both my drives reappeared (although on starting iTunes I get a burning error message - still works fine though).

My external drive is working 100%. My internal drive, however, is now hanging windows every time I insert a disc again. As soon as I remove the disc windows I hangs again.

I appreciate your help.
