I am having a problem with my WD Black drive. It started to make a repetitive noise last week and got it RMAed. I got the new drive yesterday and installed it only to have the problem come back. I made a recording of the sound and it can be heard here. The drive I RMAed was a WD1003FZEX. They sent me the 2 TB version to replace it.

Run "HDTune" on this drive and check for errors.

It is running now. It is currently 75% done and no problems so far. I do notice that when I ran the benchmark the noise went away. Also no issues under the Health tab.

After everything is done and running fine don't forget to do a backup on to an external disk. Regular and frequent backups are important!

I finished the test and it found no errors. The drive still makes the sound though. What I said before was that it did not make the sound when it was doing the benchmark but after it was done it continued to make it.

Two weeks ago I bought a new 2 TB WD Performance series hard disk. It is much faster than my older 1 TB WD Caviar Black drives and does not make any strange sounds while running.

Check with WD tech support. At the factory, automated assembly lines are fast; and they also make defective assemblies fast and some of these may slip through. See what WD has to say regarding this issue.

I talked to a WD rep and they think it sounds like the media itself may have shattered or there's something wrong with the spindle that rotates the drive platters. They are going to send me another replacement.

Proceed with the RMA.
