Windows 7 Home/Ultimate problem

My hard drive failed and my laptop wouldn't start up. Took it to a local shop to have them install a new hard drive and transfer my files. For the first few months it was working fine and now it has popup messages every 5 minutes asking me to verify Windows. In the bottom left corner it states that this copy of Windows 7 is not genuine. I purchased this laptop direct from manufacturer and had no issues with it for the past 3 years. When I tried to verify Windows with the code I have on the "Genuine Windows sticker type thing" it is coming up as being invalid. Seems they installed Windows Ultimate, instead of whatever lower edition I had originally. What can I do to solve this problem? I can't really get anything done with that irritating popup happening every few moments. Is there some way I can "downgrade" the version I have on my laptop now? I just want it to work normally again. :( Thanks in advance for all the help.

Seems they installed Windows Ultimate,

It seems they installed a bootleg copy, or a copy that has already been used elsewhere.
Either take it back to them and demand a fix, or reinstall your original OS with the original license key (Win 7 Home Premium). Or buy another copy.

But if a repair shop is unscrupulous to install a bootleg copy on a customers PC, I wouldn't expect them to make things right.

You could possibly call MS and report them, and maybe, possibly MS will give you a license free. Maybe.

I filed a counterfeit software report with Microsoft. And yes, I won't ever go there again. I thought it was weird that they only charged me for the hard drive and a minor service charge. I hope I can install my original version of 7 on the hard drive, otherwise I might just make this new one a secondary and install my original version with my key on another hard disk... hopefully I can find a really cheap one. I did try to take it back but they said they wouldn't be able to downgrade versions and that this one was installed by mistake. Thanks guys...
