I tried going from 32bit homr premium to professional and that didn't work. It daid i have to use the anytime upgrade...

Yes. The keys belong to the edition, not the architecture.

You may use a Windows 7 Home Premium key to install either the 32 bit version or 64 bit version of the operating system, but you may not use a Windows 7 Home Premium key to install a Windows 7 Professional version.

Yes, going from Home Premium to Professional requires a new license. The Home Premium license will not work with a Professional install.
