Are there any server based RAID implementations that can utilize dual RAID cards in like an active/passive type mode to avoid a single point of failure? When I say active/passive I mean a second controller not servicing IO although in a ready state to be brought online in the event of a failure.

I work with a lot of Dell Servers usually with their PERC cards. Now if your saying having two raid cards, but the second has nothing connected to it just in and turned on and if one fails just plug the drives into that one and have it boot right up then Yes that should work. If they are the same RAID Card. Even if they are different as long as the OS had the drivers installed for it. RAID is pretty good and detecting if a RAID was on the existing hard drives and imports the Foreign settings. My have to go into the RAID and import it or when it starts up Press a key setting to import the config.

Now if you want both cards to have RAID and both cards to have Hard drives then not sure on that one. I would say setup the hardware raid the...

Now if you want both cards to have RAID and both cards to have Hard drives then not sure on that one. I would say setup the hardware raid the same with the same drives on both, then when in windows do a software raid between the two since it will see the other RAID as a single drive of course. Not sure how this will stand up against one of the RAID cards Failing though.

From doing a quick search i don't really see anything about a Backup Raid Controller. I'm sure something like that Exist but its probably in the Enterprise area and those controller cards probably aren't sold to the public if they do exist. thats some pretty heavy duty stuff.
